From Miami, Atlanta is only a 2 hour flight away or possible as a 10 hour car journey. We flew there for a long weekend in March. The weather was definitely cooler and greyer than Miami at that time which made for a change. We chose an Airbnb in the Druid Hills area. It was only a 15 minutes drive from downtown but felt like we were out in the countryside in a lovely wooded area. The children enjoyed playing out at the back of the house where there was also a stream, reminding them more of their days in Switzerland.
First stop was the World of Coca Cola. A fun, interesting museum with plenty of freebies. More fizzy drinks than my children are usually allowed so they were more than happy. And be sure to video your group trying ‘Beverly’ from Italy – great reactions to this bitter drink! The museum is located in Centennial Olympic Park so we got some fresh air and worked off the sugar with a walkthrough and a play in the fountains. Driving back to the house we spotted Ponce City Market, a great food hall, well worth a stop.
Next day we were back to the same area for the well known Georgia Aquarium. Huge place with lots to see. Afterwards, we were hungry and had seen a few restaurants close by and next to where we had parked in the Marietta Street parking lot. We got a table on the upstairs terrace at Stats Brewpub. There was an Atlanta Falcons’ game that evening at their nearby stadium so plenty of supporters were in there too adding to the atmosphere.
For our final morning, we decided on some local history and drove to the Martin Luther King Jr National Historic site. We visited the exhibits in the visitor centre then walked to Ebenezer Baptist Church, where he and his father were pastors, Fire Station No. 6 and his birth home.
And a last leg stretch before the flight at Krog Street graffiti tunnel.
On a separate trip to Atlanta for a waterpolo tournament, so a weekend spent entirely poolside except for our last meal on route to the airport, we were recommended Fox Bros. Bar-B-Q. Hugely popular place for tasty southern barbecue.
